This beautiful, soft 24 color lithograph is titled "Elisha's Blessing" and is based on a story that happened with Elisha the Prophet. Elisha embodied the nobility of Judaism for his generation. The Scripture expresses Elisha's greatness by setting forth his compassion for others.
This story involves a destitute widow who came to Elisha crying, saying that her husband's creditors had come to take away her sons to be slaves. Elisha wanted to help the woman and asked her what she had in her house. She answered that she had nothing except for a vial of oil. He told her to go borrow as many empty vessels from her neighbors as she could and then go into a room, close the door so that no one sees and pour the oil into the jugs. She did so and all the vessels filled up with oil from this little vial. The woman went to tell Elisha what had happened and he told her that she could now sell the oil, pay her creditors and live off the remainder.(Kings II 4:1-7)
This lithograph is not only a pretty piece of artwork, but once you know the story it has deep feeling to it -- a feeling of compassion for a fellow human being. It is a great conversation piece as well as a wonderful addition to a Judaica Collection.
